Wharton did not grow as a suburb. It was incorporated in 1895 as Port Oram, out of parts of Randolph and Rockaway Townships, and the settlements that voted to form it — Port Oram, Irondale, Luxemburg, Maryville, Mount Pleasant — were mine camps and housing for blast furnace and silk mill workers. The name changed to Wharton in 1902, after the industrialist Joseph Wharton.
The borough started life as an ore shipping port on the Morris Canal, and Wharton has preserved one of the longest surviving stretches of that canal anywhere in the state. Main Street runs about a mile, from St. Mary's at Route 46 up to the old canal basin.
All of which means the residential streets were laid out for a different kind of traffic. They are narrow, they were built for far smaller vehicles, and a modern crossover on them meets tight turns, kerbs closer than the driver expects, and surfaces that have been patched for a century.

Worth it, particularly if the steering wheel now sits off-centre or the car pulls. A single hard impact can knock alignment out or bend a component without any dramatic symptom, and the cost shows up later as prematurely worn tyres.
I kerbed a wheel. Is that just cosmetic?
